Portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus in the Toruń Town Hall.

Nicolaus Copernicus, Polish astronomer and mathematician, was born February 19, 1473 in Toruń.

His greatest achievement was the formulation of the heliocentric theory, positing that the Earth revolved around the Sun and not the other way around. This overturned previous views of the solar system, which had placed the Earth at the center of the universe. His work De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, published just before his death in 1543, contributed to advancements in science, influencing the development of astronomy and even architecture.

Copernicus was also a clergyman as well as physician, and his interests ranged from astronomy to economics. His work was a milestone that changed the face of science and contributed to a new way of thinking about the cosmos and man’s place in it.

Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God, In the collection of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków where Copernicus had studied. Painted by Jan Matejko, the painting was completed in 1873 for the 400th anniversary of Copernicus’s birth.
