The caption “Do Broni — Wstępujcie Do Armji Ochotniczej!” translates as “To Arms! Join the Volunteer Army!” 

Historically, military and wartime posters have been used to recruit, inspire, build morale, instruct, and/or influence allies and enemies.

This poster dates from 1920, and is clearly aimed at recruiting Polish volunteers to fight against the Bolsheviks in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919–1920. Read more....

The dramatic image depicts a Polish soldier fighting off the multi-headed fire-breathing Bolshevik monster. Its artist is identified only by his initials, J.P.

Poland literally disappeared from the map of Europe for 123 years, beginning in 1795 (when its three neighbors, Russia, Austria-Hungary and Prussia, divided the country among them), and did not regain its independence as a nation until 1918 with the end of World War I. However, the Treaty of Versailles which officially ended World War I did not settle the border between the newly independent Poland and its former occupier Russia, then controlled by the Bolsheviks.

The Polish-Bolshevik war began in February 1919. Poland’s leader, Jozef Piłsudski, wanted to incorporate into Poland as much as possible of historic Poland’s eastern territory. Vladimir Lenin, leader of Bolshevik Russia, wanted to reincorporate Poland into Russia and spread the communist revolution to western Europe—for the Bolsheviks, the shortest route to Berlin and Paris lay through Warsaw. Over a two-year period, the newly independent Poland fought and defeated Bolshevik Russia. The turning point of the war came in August 1920 with the Battle of Warsaw, sometimes called “the Miracle on the Vistula,” when in an unexpected and stunning victory, the Poles routed the Russian forces—a defeat that Josef Stalin, at the time a political commissar of Bolshevik Russia and in command of the Southwestern Front, would never forget or forgive.
