Under overall command of General Władysław Anders, Polish II Corps finally took heavily fortified Monte Cassino from the Germans in a fierce battle that lasted from May 11 to May 18, 1944 — thereby opening the road to Rome for the Allies after three prior attempts by other Allied forces had failed.

The Skorpions bore heavy losses from landmines, including one M4 Sherman tank which, with its crew, was destroyed in crossing the minefield. Theirs is the only tank used in Monte Cassino combat that remains as a memorial on the battlefield.
