The caption “Wyprobowani W Bojach — Na Straży Granic I Demokracji” translates as “Proven in Battle — The Guard of Polish Borders and Democracy.”

In Europe, World War II ended in May 1945. Immediately following war’s end, Poland was plunged into chaos as the communists were asserting control against resistance by factions of the Polish Underground.

At the Teheran (late 1943) and Yalta (February 1945) Conferences among the Big Three (Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin), Roosevelt and Churchill effectively consigned Poland to the Soviet sphere of influence by giving in to Stalin’s demands — although their ally Poland was neither invited to those conferences nor consulted.

Poland, which had just spent six years fighting Nazi Germany, did not want to be taken over by the communists any more than it had wanted to be taken over by the Germans. Stalin knew this, of course. Beginning more than a year before the war ended, the Soviets began targeting their nominal allies in the Polish Underground, seeking to eliminate any future opposition as quickly as possible.

While this postwar poster uses familiar Polish military imagery and language, it was published by the main propaganda department of the fledgling Polish communist regime, which was trained and controlled by the Soviets.

Historically, military and wartime posters have been used to recruit, inspire, build morale, instruct, and/or influence allies and enemies. This poster may have been intended merely to honor the corps of Polish border guards or perhaps to recruit for the border guards. But it may also have served as a subtle warning for those who might attempt to enter or even leave Poland clandestinely.

Our poster is reproduced with permission from a 1945 original in a private collection. Available in two types of paper and two sizes.

This product is made especially for you as soon as you place an order, which is why it might take us a bit longer to deliver it to you. Making products on demand instead of in bulk helps reduce overproduction, so thank you for making thoughtful purchasing decisions!

Our products are printed and/or made primarily in North America or Europe, usually depending on which location is closer to your shipping address. In many cases, however, the underlying components will be sourced from other countries, which may be reflected on a small “Made in” label or tag.
